What Wood Do You Have?

There are many species of wood that have been used for flooring. In this section we will show a few commonly found in our area. Some wood can be confused as others with this information we hope to help and guide you in the right direction.

White Oak

Heartwood is light brown and Sapwood is white to cream. The grain is open with larger rays than red oak. There is a considerable amount of variation among boards in color and grain texture, variations are less pronounced than red oak.

Red Oak

Heartwood and sapwood are similar, sapwood being slightly lighter in color. Most of wood has a reddish tone making it redder than white oak. The grain is slightly coarser (more porous) than white oak.

Heart Pine

Heartwood is yellow after sanding and turns deep pinkish tan to a warm reddish brown within weeks due to high resin content. Sapwood remains yellow, with occasional blue-black sap stain. Grain can be swirly or pinstriped. Commonly confused as fir.

Douglas Fir

Heartwood is yellowish tan to light brown. Sapwood is tan to white. Nearly all fir flooring is vertical-grain or riftsawn clear resulting in normally straight grain. Young trees (moderate to rapid growth) have reddish heartwood giving it the name of red fir. The narrow-ringed wood of old trees may be yellowish-brown making it known as yellow fir. Commonly confused as southern yellow after the sun has bleached and faded it out.

Southern Yellow Pine

Heartwood varies from light yellow orange to a red brown or yellowish brown. Sapwood is a light tan to yellowish white. Shortleaf pine, longleaf pine, loblolly pine and slash pine all have very similar characteristics to fir making it hard to distinguish.

Maple

Heartwood is creamy white to light reddish brown. Sapwood is pale white to creamy white. Older maple will take on more of s a brownish tone while newer maple will have more of a pinkish tone.
